This bibliography cites those Canadian and foreign reference sourcesthat describe Canadian people, institutions, organizations,publications, art, literature, languages, and history. It lists booksof a general nature as well as works in the disciplines of history andthe humanities. These large divisions are then broken down by subject,genre, type of document, and province or territory. Titles of national,provincial/territorial, or regional interest are included in everysubject area when available. The contents of the book are indexed fourways: by name, title, French subject, and English subject. And tofacilitate browsing, the major reference books (those dealing with morethan one subject or a large geographical region) are alsocross-referenced.
Few painters lived the intellectual adventures of the early twentieth century as intensely as Albert Gleizes. At the centre of the public scandal over Cubism that broke out in Paris in 1911, he was with Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia in New York during the war and was one of the first European avant-garde artists to respond to the scale and vigour of New York life. Gleizes was also one of the few French painters of the 1920s to recognise non-representational painting as the logical development of Cubism. His work as a painter is accompanied by an immense body of theoretical work, addressing the question posed to starkly by Duchamp and Picabia: why should we paint? What is the justification for the work of art? Over his life he touches on many spheres of human activity - religious, political and cultural history, physics and the philosophy of work. This fascinating book follows Gleizes' argument as it evolves, drawing on detailed analysis of works of art and both published and unpublished writings. It reveals Gleizes, not just as a significant historical personality, but as a man whose work and thinking remains astonishingly fresh and relevant to the needs of our own time.
This is the first complete bibliography of the writings of Yvan Goll (1891-1950), the French-German poet, novelist, dramatist, journalist and translator. The first part gives full details of Goll's publications during his lifetime, and includes books and pamphlets, contributions to periodicals, newspapers and anthologies, books and journals edited by Goll, translations by Goll, and his published letters. The second part makes it possible to trace the dissemination of Goll's work, with posthumous first publications, posthumous reprints in periodicals and anthologies, translations of Goll's works by others (into twenty languages) and musical collaborations and settings. A comprehensive index of titles or first lines allows the user to trace single works through the various sections; there are also indexes of writers translated by Goll and letters by recipient. This bibliography documents the huge scope of the writings of an author who wrote in three major languages and published in many countries. It contains a wide range of references to texts hitherto unknown, many of them items in journals and newspapers, and is by far the most reliable source to date of what Goll actually wrote.

The first collection of the work of Montreal photographer Gabor Szilasi, this retrospective traces the evolution of an artist and his vision. Since emigrating from Hungary in 1957 Szilasi has become a pioneer of original art photography in Quebec. His depictions of people and their way of life provide a unique visual record of contemporary life. The book contains more than ninety duotone and colour reproductions of Szilasi's work, including the studies of the Beauce, Charlevoix, and other regions of Quebec for which he is best known. Also included are a collection of street photographs and portraits taken in Montreal, a recent series of Polaroid portraits of women, and a selection of photographs taken in Hungary, Italy, and Poland. Art historian David Harris provides a critical essay on Szilasi's work and a comprehensive chronology and bibliography.
Stealing the Show
In the past, few women artists were commissioned to create public works of art. These seven artists received most of the commissions awarded to women between 1958 and 1988, although until now their sizable body of work has been given little attention. Taking into account the purpose of public art - to enhance the environment and communicate with a public often perplexed and sometimes alienated by works of art - Gunda Lambton assesses the appeal and quality of commissioned works by these artists. She highlights the difficulties that many women artists encounter and combines detailed biographies of the artists with an examination of their work.
