Steven Overman explores the concordant values of the Protestant ethic, capitalism, and sport by applying German scholar Max Weber's seminal thesis. Weber demonstrated a relationship between the Protestant ethic and a form of economic behavior he labeled the "Spirit of capitalism." The work introduces readers to the doctrines and values experience, focusing on the framing of work and play in light of an intense unease with human pleasure and idleness. The United States is portrayed as the quintessential Protestant ethic society. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Sport proposes "seven Protestant virtues" built upon rational asceticism and the work ethic that comprise the Protestant ethic. The spirit of capitalism is presented as a derivative of this ethic and a major force in shaping American institutions, notable organized sport. The second part of the book discusses the spirit of American sport as it is manifested in values the author identifies as the American sport ethic: seven constructs that correspond to the seven Protestant "virtues." In 1904-1905 Max Weber published the sociological classic "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism." In this book Weber argues that religion, specifically "ascetic Protestantism" provided the essential social and cultural infrastructure that led to modern capitalism. Weber's suggests that Protestantism has "an affinity for capitalism." Indeed, something within Protestantism-by accident or design-creates the necessary preconditions that lead to the flowering of a just, free, and prosperous society. At the same time, Weber wonders if the economic backwardness of certain societies and regions of the world are somehow related to their religious affiliation. Weber's century old thesis challenges the erroneous core assumptions of many secular humanists, postmoderns, Roman Catholic traditionalists, and Islamists. In view of the threat of the War on Terror, and in the face of the inadequate response of secularist and post-modern intellectuals, it is vital that we understand and appreciate the profound paradigm shift that occurred during the sixteenth and seventeenth century that led to the unfolding of modern capitalism. Despite a plethora of critics Max Weber's one-hundred year old thesis still stands.

The following work is build up in accordance to the structure of the book, which is divided into two parts, namely, first the consideration of religious affiliation and social stratification, further on the 'spirit of capitalism' and finally the examination of Luther's concept of calling. In part two Weber describes various foundations of worldly asceticism, like Calvinism, Pietism, Methodism and Baptism, before he comes to the conclusionally chapter, in which he debates the connection between asceticism and the 'spirit of capitalism'. In the critical conclusion of this work, I will examine my point of view in regarding to the former described content of his book. Further I want to mention out, that after the publishing of his book in English in 1930 a lot of criticism was perpetrated. That means, that most of my own critics are congruent to other scientists.

Against this common consensus, Kathryn D. Blanchard argues that the theological thought of John Calvin and the Protestant movement as a whole has much to say that challenges the current incarnation of the capitalist order. This book develops an approach to Christian economic ethics that celebrates God's gift of human freedom, while at the same time acknowledging necessary, and indeed vital, limitations in the context of material and social life. This book explores the important implications of this shift in economic thinking from a theological perspective.
